Image/Video quality estimation is a very challenging topic in the image processing area of research. The human visual system (HVS) is so complicated that till now no full description of this system exists.
When an image/video is encoded and transmitted, several artifacts may appear in the decoded signal due to the encoding/decoding process and to transmission errors. These artifacts can degrade the quality of the received signal and it is always desired to monitor this quality and to assess the user experience.
The best way to evaluate the quality of a received image/video is by letting people watch it and subjectively assess its quality. This process is very complicated and costly, and is not suitable for real-time monitoring. Consequently, researchers try to automate this process by implementing objective image/video quality metrics that try to estimate the quality of a video as perceived by human beings.
