Professional video applications in industrial manufacturing, monitoring systems for buildings, and medical applications need video signals with very high quality. These signals could have very high resolution in spatial as well as in temporal direction. Furthermore, the color resolution of these signals can also become relatively high in comparison to consumer video. Such signals require a huge amount of data to be transported. To reduce the data volume, the video signal needs to be compressed without visible information loss. Current video compression systems are well designed, but they are optimized for consumer quality. Therefore, this topic concentrates on research work for nearly lossless up to lossless compression of video data. The current H.264/AVC standard as well as the upcoming HEVC standard are investigated for high quality compression. Furthermore, it is considered that the compression performance is dominated by the noise within the video signal to be compressed. Therefore, also the noise influence on the compression efficiency is investigated within this project and improvements based on this observations are developed for the recent video coding standards.
