The aim of the project is to develop a more efficient representation for multidimensional medical datasets with respect to their storage, transmission and visualization. Examples of such datasets are 3-D images or videos of the human body, which have been acquired using structural imaging methods like computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Current image and video coding techniques, developed for coding captured illuminated scenes, may serve as a starting point and are indeed already applied in clinical applications (e. g. JPEG 2000), but they are not optimal in many respects. Differences arise for instant from the special features of the data, such as deformable motions, the existence of a third dimension, the absence of illumination, the noise characteristics, and so on. Further constraints are the special work flow as well as the hardware equipment in hospitals. In this context, not only the physicians persistent pressure of time and the networked infrastructure must be considered, but even so must some practical conditions, like the preferred visualization methods and the facilities of existing applications. Concrete starting points are the motion model, redundancy reduction in Z-direction, scalable coding, as well as accelerated implementations for graphics cards.
