Models and methods towards compressed video analysis and interpretation for adaptive presentation provisioning

The recent years have witnessed an increasing consumption and production of digital video items of different qualities, on diverse communication terminals, and often across multiple types of communication networks. Recently coined in a larger context as Universal Multimedia Access (UMA), this scenario calls for provision of different presentations of the same content/information, suiting multifarious media production-consumption contexts. This phenomenon hence solicits an intelligent content-oriented adaptation to bridge content authors and consumers in a context of multimedia chains. Assuming that the prevailing exchanged and stored video sequences portrayed in this scenario are in accordance with one of the known compressed formats such as MPEG-4, this research addresses the problem of spatial and temporal structuring mechanisms upon such sequences, aiming at an adaptive presentation provision, supporting the content-based and, often, unsupervised video adaptation.
