Transcoding of Digital Videostreams

The ongoing digitalization of nearly each formerly analog technology has also changed many aspects in the world of the entertainment and multimedia industries. Throughout the past ten to twenty years many digital video compression formats have been developed by both national and international organisations.

The development of new standards led to both advantages and disadvantages for the consumer. On the one hand, greatly improved compression at even high video quality have made internet applications more and more convenient. Especially, if considering the enhancement of bandwidth for private persons. But, on the other hand, the coexistence of such a great number of compression formats and sub-formats is not suitable to be presented in one cheap consumer electronical device.

Transcoding of digital video aims to reuse information from one digital stream, to form a given output stream with only as small quality degradation as possible. Transcoding within the DCT domain or domain interchange, reuse and refinement of motion vectors and drift of created errors are going to be investigated, only to name a few topics. If it is not possible to stay within the frequency domain, transcoding can be used to improve an encoder by using side information of the bitstream, thus reducing complexity.

For this reason, transcoding may be interesting for content providers, which may deliver the video material at any bitstream format with a negligible amount of quality losses.
