The paper "Multizone Sound Reproduction in Reverberant Environments Using an Iterative Least-Squares Filter Design Method with a Spatiotemporal Weighting Function" by Michael Buerger, M.Sc., Dipl.-Ing. Christian Hofmann, Cornelius Frankenbach, and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Walter Kellermann has been awarded a 'WASPAA Student Travel Grant' for the 'IEEE Workshop on Applications of Signal Processing to Audio and Acoustics' (WASPAA) 2017 in New Paltz, NY, USA.

The lecture on 'Signals and Systems II' given by Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup was ranked first in the teaching evaluation of the Technical Faculty in the summer term 2017, with an overall rating of 1.24 in the category required subjects (VP20).

The lab course 'Multimedia Communications', supervised by Dipl.-Ing. Andrea Eichenseer and the tutors Marco Bader, Meng Chen, Parul Dhingra, Kristian Fischer und Bowei Li, was ranked first in the teaching evaluation of the Technical Faculty in the summer term 2017, with an overall rating of 1.02 in the category lab courses (P5).

The supplement on 'Image and Video Compression' (IVC) given by Lanz, Daniela, M.Sc. was ranked second in the teaching evaluation of the Technical Faculty in the summer term 2017, with an overall rating of 1.40 in the category ÜP20.

Martin Pöllot M.Sc., Dr.-Ing. Dominic Springer, Ralph Schleifer, Monika Nitsch und Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup received a "Distinguished Paper Award" at the "International Conference on Consumer Electronics" (ICCE) 2017 in Berlin, Germany for the paper "Finger-Trace Generator for SWYPE Touch Screen Testing Applications".

Veit Pirkl, B.Sc., will receive the Siemens Master Award for his thesis entitled "Beschreibung der nichtregelmäßigen Abtastung und frequenzselektiven Rekonstruktion im Compressed Sensing Framework" which he wrote at the Chair of Multimedia Communication and Signal Processing. The award will be handed over during the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Engineering on July 7, 2017.

Nils Genser M.Sc.Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Seiler and Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup received a "Best Student Paper Award" at the "International Conference on Systems, Signals and Image Processing" (IWSSIP) 2017 in Poznań, Poland for the paper "Local Statistics Estimation for Rapid Frequency Selective Extrapolation".

The paper “An improved uncertainty decoding scheme with weighted samples for multi-channel DNN-HMM hybrid systems” by Christian Hümmer M.Sc., Dr.-Ing. Ramón Astudillo und Prof. Dr.-Ing. Walter Kellermann received a Best Paper Award at the Joint Workshop on Hands-free Speech Communication and Microphone Arrays (HSCMA) 2017 in San Francisco, USA.

This conference is viewed as one of the globally most important conferences in multichannel microphone array signal processing and included more than 40 publications in 2017.

The supplement for Statistical Signal Processing (StaSiP) given by Alexander Schmidt M.Sc. was ranked third in the teaching evaluation of the Technical Faculty in the winter term 2016/2017, with an overall rating of 1.22 in the category ÜP5.

Die Doktorandin Sanjukta Ghosh M.Sc. hat den Preis der Hans-Wilhelm- und Helga Schüßler-Stiftung 2016 erhalten. Sie stammt aus Indien und hat Computational Engineering mit Auszeichnung an der FAU studiert und promoviert derzeit am Lehrstuhl für Multimediakommunikation und Signalverarbeitung. Sie engagiert sich in verschiedenen sozialen Projekten und kümmert sich zudem um Studierende aus Indien, die neu an der FAU sind. Diesen hilft sie bei der Integration vor Ort. Ihr bemerkenswertes Engagement und ihre herausragenden Leistungen würdigt die Hans-Wilhelm- und Helga Schüßler-Stiftung mit einem Förderpreis in Höhe von 1000 Euro.

The seminar "Selected Topics in Multimedia Communications and Signal Processing" organized by Christian Hümmer M.Sc. and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Walter Kellermann has been ranked second in the category S5 (seminar, ≥ 5 returns ) within the course evaluation of the technical faculty in the winter term 2015/2016.

Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Seiler, senior scientist at the Chair of Multimedia Communications and Signal Processing (Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup), received an LFUI - Guest Professorship for two months from the Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck (LFUI). The objective of the "LFUI - Guest Professorship" initiative is to foster scientific and didactic exchange at the university of Innsbruck and to support the internationalization of the LFUI. For the guest professorship, Dr. Seiler will research and teach at the LFUI during February and March 2016.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup received the Teaching Award 2015 of the Faculty of Engineering of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg for his outstanding achievements in teaching. The prize was awarded at the anniversary celebration of the Faculty of Engineering on November 27, 2015.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup has been elected as a member of the Multimedia Signal Processing Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society for the term 2016 to 2018.

Mr. Veit Pirkl was awarded the Siemens Corporate Technology Prize at the Graduation Ceremony of the Faculty of Engineering on 03.07.2015 for his bachelor thesis entitled "Parallelization of Frequency-Selective Extrapolation on the Basis of the Xeon-Phi Platform", which he did at the Chair of Multimedia Communication and Signal Processing.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Walter Kellermann has been elected  'Vice President Technical Directions' of the IEEE Signal Processing Society for the period from 2016 to 2018. As one of four Vice Presidents of the Society he will oversee the activities of the Society’s technical community, as embodied in its Technical Committees, and will be responsible for shaping the future technical profile of the Society. The IEEE Signal Processing Society with more than 17000 members is currently the fourth-largest out of 39 IEEE Societies with a total of more than 430000 IEEE members.

The supplements in "Communication Networks" given by Dr.-Ing. Thomas Richter were ranked second out of 62 courses, with an overall rating of 1.24 in the category ÜP5 (compulsory subject).

The European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) honors Prof. Dr.-Ing. Walter Kellermann with the society’s prestigious 'Group Technical Achievement Award 2015' for his "contributions to acoustic signal processing for blind source separation and spatial filtering through extensive activities of his research group". The award will be presented at the European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO) 2015 in Nice, France.

André Kaup was ranked first in the teaching evaluation of the School of Engineering in the winter term 2013/2014, with an overall rating of 1.38 in the category requried subjects (VP20). The lecture Visual Computing for Communication given by Professor Kaup received an overall rating of 1.07 and ranked first in category VP5.

The publication “A Bayesian network view on linear and nonlinear acoustic echo cancellation” by Dr.-Ing. Roland Maas, Christian Hümmer M.Sc., Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Schwarz, Dipl.-Ing. Christian Hofmann, and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Walter Kellermann received a Best Paper Award at the IEEE China Summit and International Conference on Signal and Information Processing (ChinaSIP) 2014 in Xi'an, China.

Michael Hentschel, master student majoring in 'Multimediasysteme' of the study program 'Informations- und Kommunikationssysteme', was awarded the ISS Studienpreis for his excellent academic achievements at the Annual General Meeting of the ITG on October 20, 2014. 
The prize is sponsored by the International Switching Symposium and awarded every other year with an endowment of 7500€ to support research abroad. Mr. Hentschel will use the support to complete his master thesis at the University Tsukuba, where he works in the area of robust speech recognition using Deep Neural Networks and thus contributes to the long lasting collaboration of audio researchers at LMS and Tsukuba.

André Kaup received a Top 10% Best Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP) in Paris in Oktober 2014 for their contribution “Reconstruction of Images Taken by a Pair of Non-Regular Sampling Sensors Using Correlation Based Matching“.

Andreas Heindel M.Sc. received the Fritz and Maria Hofmann Award for his Master's thesis entitled "Evaluation of Methods for Two-Layer Scalable Lossless Video Coding". The prize was awarded at the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Engineering of the FAU on July 4th, 2014.

The publication “The elitist particle filter based on evolutionary strategies as novel approach for nonlinear acoustic echo cancellation” by Christian Hümmer M.Sc., Dipl.-Ing. Christian Hofmann, Dr.-Ing. Roland Maas, Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Schwarz and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Walter Kellermann received a Best Student Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP) 2014 in Florence, Italy. The paper was ranked 1st in the area of Audio and Acoustic Signal Processing and received a 3rd prize in the overall ranking. In total, 6 winning papers were selected among 1067 student papers. The conference is viewed as the globally most important conference in Signal Processing and receives more than 3000 submissions each year.

The Lecture Image and Video Compression given by Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup was ranked second in the teaching evaluation of the Faculty of Engineering in the summer term 2013, with an overall rating of 1.29 in the category required subjects (VP5).

The lecture Visual Computing for Communication given by Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup was ranked second in the teaching evaluation of the School of Engineering in the winter term 2012/2013, with an overall rating of 1.25 in the category requried subjects (VP5).

Andreas Heindel M.Sc., Dr.-Ing. Eugen Wige and Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup were ranked first in the Grand Video Compression Challenge at Picture Coding Symposium in San Jose, California, in December 2013. Their contribution "Sample-based Weighted Prediction for Lossless Enhancement Layer Coding in HEVC" received the Best Tool for High Efficiency Video Coding Award. Moreover, the talk Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup gave within the finalist panel of the compression challenge received a Best Presentation Award.

The publication "Evaluation of a high dynamic range video caemra with non-regular sensor" from Dr.-Ing. Michael Schöberl, Joachim Keinert, Matthias Ziegler, Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Seiler, Marco Niehaus, Gerald Schuller, Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup and Siegfried Fößel received a Best Paper Award at the SPIE Electronic Imaging Conference "2013 IS&T/SPIE International Conference on Digital Photography IX" in Burlingame, USA.

On 21 June 2013 was Dr.-Ing. Heinrich Löllmannsince October 2012 Academic Council on LMS, awarded by the RWTH Aachen, the Borchers MedalHe received this award for its completed with honors dissertation entitled"All-Pass Based Analysis-Synthesis Filter BanksDesign and Application".

Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup has been namend an IEEE Fellow effective January 2013. He is recognized "for contributions to video coding and object-based video signal processing".

Dipl.-Ing. Christian Herglotz, Dipl.-Ing. Dominic Springer, Dipl.-Ing. Andrea Eichenseer and Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup received the Paul Dan Cristea Special Award on the IWSSIP International Conference on Systems, Signals and Image Processing  2013 for their paper "Modeling the Energy Consumption of HEVC Intra Decoding".

Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup received the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society 2012 Best Associate Editor Award "in recognition of his outstanding performance as Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology", a publication of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, in May 2013.

The lecture Visual Computing for Communication given by Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup was ranked second in the teaching evaluation of the School of Engineering in the winter term 2011/2012, with an overall rating of 1.20 in the category requried subjects (VP5).

The LMS senior scientist Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Seiler received an award from the Staedtler Foundation for his dissertation with title "Signal Extrapolation Using Sparse Representations and its Applications in Video Communication". The award carries a value of 3500 Euro and is donated every year to ten graduates of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. The lecture Image and Video Compression given by Professor Kaup received an overall rating of 1.26 and ranked second in category VP5.

The lectures "Audiovisual Scenes" by Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Rudolf Rabenstein und "Visual Computing for Communications" by Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup were ranked first among 51 modules in the teaching evaluation of the School of Engineering in the winter term 2011/2012, with an overall rating of 1.17 and 1.20 respectively in the category elective subjects (VW5).

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Walter Kellermann has recently been elected as 'Member at Large' of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (http://www.signalprocessingsociety.org/about-sps/boards-committees/board-of-governors/) for 2013-2015. The IEEE Signal Processing Society is the first and one of the largest of 38 Societies of the IEEE with about 16000 members. The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is the largest professional organization in the area of science and technology counting more than 400.000 members in 150 countries.

Dipl.-Ing. Thomas Richter, Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Seiler, Dipl.-Ing. Wolfgang Schnurrer und Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup erhielten im September 2012 für ihre Publikation „Robust Super-Resolution in a Multiview Setup Based on Refined High Frequency Synthesis" einen Best Paper Award auf dem IEEE Multimedia Signal Processing Workshop, Banff, Kanada.

Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Seiler, senior scientist at the LMS, received an award from the "Informationstechnischen Gesellschaft (ITG) im VDE" for his dissertation with title "Signal Extrapolation Using Sparse Representations and its Applications in Video Communication".

The LMS audio group headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Walter Kellermann achieved the 2nd place at the international PASCAL CHiME Speech Separation and Recognition Challenge, with 13 participating research groups from all over the world. 

The competition aimed at filtering and automatically recognizing human voice commands recorded in extremely adverse environments. The major obstacle was the high microphone-speaker distance of 2 meters in presence of strong background noise, such as playing children, TV and laundry appliances. 

The approach developed by the LMS audio group is based on the in-house TRINICON framework, which allows inter alia for blind source separation and has already been successfully employed in various applications. 

The supplement for the lecture "Communication Networks", taught by Dr.-Ing. Tobias Tröger, was voted second best supplement of the school of engineering, in the category ÜW5, with an overall rating of 1.33 in winter term 2010/2011.

The supplement for the lecture "Signal Processing for Speech and Audio", taught by Dr.-Ing. Edwin Mabande, was voted best supplement of the school of engineering, in the category ÜW10, with an overall rating of 1.53 in winter term 2010/2011.

The lecture Signals and Systems II given by Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup was ranked first among 34 modules in the teaching evaluation of the School of Engineering in the summer term 2011, with an overall rating of 1.4 in the category requried subjects (VP10).

The supplement Statistical Signal Processing given by Dr.-Ing. Roland Maas was ranked third among 20 modules in the teaching evaluation of the School of Engineering in the summer term 2011, with an overall rating of 1.2 in the category elective subjects (ÜW5).

The publication from Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Eugen WigeM. Sc. Gilbert Yammine and Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup “Adaptive In-Loop Noise Filtered Prediction for High Efficiency Video Coding” received a best paper award at the IEEE Multimedia Signal Processing Workshop in Hangzhou, China, 17-19 October 2011.

Dipl.-Ing. Michael Schöberl erreichte im Mai 2011 den 3. Platz beim Wettbewerb Fraunhofer Ideenwelt für Forschungsarbeiten zur unregelmäßigen Bildaufnahme.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Walter Kellermann  was appointed as a member to the IEEE James L. Flanagan Speech and Audio Processing Award Committee for service from 2011 on.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Walter Kellermann was awarded the Julius von Haast Fellowship Award 2012 by the Ministry of Science & Innovation and the Royal Society of New Zealand. The fellowship includes a grant of 92000 NZ$ to support the collaboration of the awardee with the scientific community in New Zealand for a period of three years.

Die Vorlesung "Kommunikationsnetze" von Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup wurde im Rahmen der Lehrevaluation der Technischen Fakultät im WS 2009/2010 mit der Gesamtnote 1,51 als zweitbeste Veranstaltung von 52 bewerteten Vorlesungen in der Kategorie Pflichtfach ausgezeichnet.

Die Übung zur Vorlesung "Signale und Systeme II" von Dipl.-Ing. (FH) E. Wige wurde im Rahmen der Lehrevaluation der Technischen Fakultät im SS 2010 mit der Gesamtnote 1,56 als zweitbeste Veranstaltung von 32 bewerteten Übungveranstaltungen in der Kategorie Pflichtfach ausgezeichnet.

Dr.-Ing. Katharina Quast und Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup erhielten im April 2010 für ihren Beitrag "Shape Adaptive Mean Shift Object Tracking Using Gaussian Mixture Models" einen Best Student Paper Award auf dem 11th International Workshop on Image Analysis for Multimedia Interactive Services, Desenzano del Garda, Italien.

Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Fecker erhielt den Promotionspreis 2010 der Staedtler-Stiftung für seine Dissertation zum Thema "Coding Techniques for Multi-View Video Signals".

Dipl.-Ing. Wolfgang Schnurrer erhielt im September 2010 den Siemens Corporate Technology Preis für seine Diplomarbeit mit dem Titel "Aufnahme von Bewegtbildern mit hohem Dynamikumfang".

Dipl.-Ing. Marcus Laumer received the award "Siemens-Diplom-Preis der Corporate Technology" in recognition of outstanding performances in his studies within the field of information and communication technologies in February 2010.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup wurde mit Wirkung vom November 2010 zum Voting Member des IEEE Communications Society Multimedia Communications Technical Committee ernannt.

The laboratory course "Multimedia Communications", teached by Dr.-Ing. Jens-Uwe Garbas together with the student tutors Kerstin Müller, Matthias Appel, and Michel Bätz was voted second best laboratory of the school of engineering with an overall rating of 1.32. The intensive support by student tutors, financed again from tuition fees, was highly appreciated by the participants.

Dr.-Ing. Xiang Li und Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Kaup erhielten im Oktober 2009 für ihren Beitrag "One-pass frame level budget allocation based on inter-frame dependency" einen Best Paper Award auf dem IEEE International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilien.

Dr.-Ing. Xiang Li received the awarded the 2008 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad in April 2009. The award recognizes Chinese students across all research-based doctoral degree fields all over the world.

Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Eugen Wige erhielt den IfKom-Förderpreis 2009 des Berufsverbandes Ingenieure für Kommunikation e.V. für seine Diplomarbeit mit dem Thema "Development of a MAC Layer Simulation Environment for Broadcast High Dynamic MANETs", angefertigt am Institut für Kommunikation und Navigation des Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt.
