Content

The Multimedia Communications Lab Course offered by the Chair of Multimedia Communications and Signal Processing is intended mainly, but not exclusively, for students enrolled in EEI, IuK, CME, CE, or WIng who have already attended the lecture Image and Video Compression or are attending it in parallel in the same term. The lab course implements parts of the lecture for practical use. During the lab course, each group of students thus implements a complete hybrid video codec, inspired by concepts of the MPEG standards, for the storage of moving images and analyzes its properties. Knowledge of MATLAB is helpful; the basics will be recapped during the first lab course session.

Registration

For participating in this lab course, a binding registration is required. You can register using the course management system mein campus (make use of the search function as needed!) starting from April 14, 2017. As the number of participants is limited, an early registration is recommended! Note: In UnivIS and mein campus, you will find the lab course under its German name "Praktikum Multimediakommunikation [PrMMK]". Registering for more than two lab courses of the current semester should be avoided.

Registration alone does not constitute a claim on participating in the lab course. On the first day of the lab course, the participants will be selected from the attendant students based on the order of registration. Therefore, all interested students (both regular and waiting list) are asked to attend the first meeting.

During the first meeting on April 27, 2017 at 2:00 pm, the participants will be chosen, groups will be formed, and an introduction to the lab course will take place. In addition, an introduction to MATLAB will be given. Attendance is mandatory  on all days of the lab course!

Dates

The lab course takes place on Thursdays at 2:00 pm sharp in 03.215, Wetterkreuz, Tennenlohe and will be supervised until 6:00 pm. According to experience, the duration of each lab experiment is approximately 3 hours for prepared students.

For a swift implementation, a thorough preparation is vital! This includes finishing all preparatory tasks in written form as well as reading the complete description of the current lab experiment. Written preparations have to be handed in at the beginning of each respective lab experiment.

There will be no extended supervision by the tutors if the estimated duration time is exceeded or if the preparatory tasks were not worked on properly! Single lab experiments may be worked on and finished independently and individually.
